The System Restore Button...

My father called me the other day.  He is somehow under the mis-guided belief that since he housed, fed, and clothed me for the first 17 years of my life, that he has the unalienable right to free computer "tech support" in perpetuity.  Far be it for me to remind him that this contractual obligation had long since expired years ago, and thus being the good son, I ended up spending an entire evening attempting to rid his computer of nasty viruses and assorted spyware.

After wasting several hours battling these digital intruders with little effectiveness, I decided that the best course of action was to restore his computer to a previous configuration using the "restore" function of Microsoft Windows.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the "restore" application, Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, has a built-in utility in their Windows operating system that essentially allows a user to go back in time.  This computer "time machine" resets the operating system to a time prior to the viral infection.  This handy application permits the infected user to initiate a "do-over" in the event that a mistake was made (like downloading a virus).

Once I initiated the system restore, all of my father’s computer problems magically went away.  Therefore I’m now once again in the good graces of my DNA donor and bask in his love and affection (only until which time his next computer problem arises).

Now wouldn’t life be so much better if somehow we all had a "restore button" that could be initiated to erase some mistake or bad decision that we made some place in our life?

Throughout the years, I have spent a considerable amount of time working with the elderly in my local community.  I very much find these activities rich in experiences and extremely rewarding.

One question that I often ask to start a conversation with a senior member of our society is, "if you could do any one thing over in your life...what would it be?"

Many times the queried senior citizen may answer that it was a financial investment not seized, or a relationship that was missed, or even perhaps that they would not have worked so hard and missed the opportunity to spend more quality time with their families...

However, I find that the most common answer to the question "what would you do over if given the chance" is "I wouldn’t change a thing"...

Myself, I believe I would have to agree with the majority.  I know that there are some "bone-headed" decisions I’ve made along the way, but in each case, I typically learned a valuable lesson.  These lessons can’t be learned in a book or through someone else’s experiences... they must be derived from one’s own experiences.

So I challenge you with the question..."what one thing would you change about your life if you had a magic restore button available to you?"...

Your answer might be something that you did and want to "take back" or perhaps it might be an opportunity not seized...whatever it might be, I’d like to hear about it...

Please e-mail me with your response to jimk@optifuse.com.

All respondents will be entered into a drawing for a special prize (yet another OptiFuse give-away opportunity).

In a few weeks, I’ll publish a few of the most interesting answers (anonymously of course)...

hope that you’ll choose to participate...

...oh and Dad...if you respond to this email by writing that you shouldn’t have had any children....then you’re on your own next time your browser is hijacked...

Thank you very much for your support of OptiFuse as we try to make you forget about your other circuit protection vendors...
